Analysis

I think with «An Inspector Calls» the author is trying to give a message to the readers. He wants to show them what possibly could happen if everything comes together although all the actions of the members of family Birling weren’t illegal. The author probably wanted to show the readers how not to treat people in daily life. Perhaps the story is also a message for the government and how they built the law with all the rights and duties. Because although all the actions of the family members weren’t illegal, the young girl still died. The mystery that the girl died after the Inspector warned the family members is perhaps also a message that nothing is lost just because it seems to be too late to react. Never say never. And if the family members would have done something at this moment and if they wouldn’t have felt in safety the girl would probably still live.

Recount

What has happened in the book so far? All three acts, which are continuous, take place in the dining-room of a fairly large suburban Birlings’ house in Brumley, and industrial city in the North Midlands. It is an evening in spring, 1912. A businessman and industrialist Arthur Birling, his superior wife Sybil and young son Eric are celebrating the engagement of daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft when they are visited by an Inspector called Goole. He tells them of the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith and though they all claim not to have known her, the inspector demonstrates that each in their own way was responsible for her death. After Goole has left the youngsters feel ashamed and the engagement is halted but Arthur Birling, doubting the inspector's authority, rings the local police station. This is the prelude to a shock which will lead to the family's ruin.

Prediction

After Arthur Birling and Sheila Birling admitted their responsibility, it gets clear that this type of telling a story must go on. Especially because the two stories have no connection beside the fact that the guilty come from the same family and the girl seems to be the same in both stories. Somehow the story must go on. If you know that the whole plot is just told in the dining room it’s clear that the frame action won’t change that much. But it gets more and more interesting how everything is interlacing. The story is built up structured and clearly so that a prediction is not that difficult to make. The question is just how every story from each family member fits with the others so that at the end there’s a sort of graduation and the story is rounded. Although the structure of the story is clear it is still very interesting and exciting to read.

Characterization

Today, I want to write about the relationship between Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft and what changed in their relationship of these engaged young people during the story. Both, Gerald Croft and Sheila Birling, come from a rich family. So, they are from the same “class”. In the beginning of the story they seem to be very happy and excited. They are locking forward having their engagement and seem to be in love. Later, when Inspector Goole asked some questions and everyone hears the sory from the respective partner, the relationship between these two people starts to get in trouble. They start to doubt and have distrust in their partner. Particularly Sheila has some reasons to overthink the relationship. In the story, they find out that Gerald Croft knew this dead girl. Gerald tells about how he met the girl and how his feelings for her developed. It gets obvious that Gerald loved this Girl. This puts these two before a tough test.

Empathy

Someone who I can relate to is Arthur Birling. He is the character I do personally most identify with. Arthur Birling seems to me like a typically businessman who does everything for the success of his business. He tells the other on the table what they should do and in which way they should do it to be successful like he is. One’s Birling says in the Book: “…and I’ve learnt in the good hard school of experience that a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own…”

Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t want to say that I’m a businessman. In no way. I think that I just have the same thoughts as him. But in my opinion, he is too strict and too rigorous. I had to learn that I sometimes should just be patiently and talk with people about how they feel. If you always just want to be efficient and just think about yourself the people will go away when the recognize that their ideas don’t take place in the others mind.

Reflection

In the first pages of the book it's described where all the plot of the book will be. It is said that everything is going to happen in the dining room of the rich family called "Birling". It remembers me at a enjoyable dinner with all the family members. Everybody is happy and the people talk with each other. Some family members make jokes and some are more listening to the others but there’s a good atmosphere. The engagement with the children of the two bosses which companies compete also shows that there must be a lot of money in this family. Personally, I learn some new words because of reading this text. Short expressions like “help yourself” seem to be easy. Yes, they are easy but that makes it not less necessary. It’s the opposite. For example, when you are in vacation in an English spoken country in a “Bed and Breakfast” Hotel and the owner of this business welcomes you in the morning and after woods he says: “help yourself with making your breakfast!” These are the word I need for the everyday life usage.
